Dodging Rain Drops

Wednesday's forecast called for showers with a possible window of no rain between 8am to noon.  So at 6:30am the texts started buzzing between a few Pot Gamers and the next thing you know a Pot Game broke out.  After picking up teams on the first tee on south, two teams headed out with umbrellas packed on the carts.  Team #1 Bear, Cheez, Chuckster and Blue Tees vs Team #2 Mad Dog, Birdie, Billy D and Bow Pete.

What seemed like balanced teams turned unbalanced quickly when Chuckster knocked in three birds in a row (4-6) and Cheez chipped in another on the 5th to take Team #1 to -2 in the 2 BB format.  Team # 2 shot a respectable +1, which ordinarily would be good enough.  On the back Bear finally woke up and made two birdies to go with Cheez's two birds and Blue Tees one.  Which put them at -2 on the back to beat Mad Dog's team +2.  So it was a sweep.  The scores showed how it happened Bear 75, Cheez 77, Chuckster 75 and Blue Tees 81 vs Mad Dog 75, Bow Pete 87, Billy D 81 and Birdie 84.

Mad Dog and Bear matched cards but no money was exchanged so YTD Mad Dog up $1.

Weekend leftovers:

The legend of Cheez continues to grow; because in his first Pot Game of the year, he somehow managed to backhand a putt hanging over the edge of the hole and miss the cup sending it skipping over the hole 5' away.  This is after Mad Dog reminded him to be careful because they needed his score.  He did make the come backer. So he didn't miss a one inch putt he missed a no inch putt.

What A Memorial Day Weekend

Saturday
Most Pot Gamers awoke to cold temps and driving rain and went deeper under the covers, but to quote Billy D "Six knuckleheads played the north course looking like drown rats".  One (Sandy) even wore shorts.  They were Mad Dog, TJ, Rama, Skrocki, Rama and Sandy.  Nothing else needs to be said...

Sunday
With the possibility of no rain and intermittent sunshine but very cool temps, twelve Pot Gamers ventured onto the south course.  Team #1 Tractorman, Dougie, Rama and Chimney lead the way with their fast play as well as their low scoring.  Team #2 Bear, Bow Pete, Birdie and Deacon were doomed from the start when Bow Pete and Bear were put together. Team #3 Skrocki, TJ, Billy D and Fireman  were competitive on the front but imploded on the back nine.  So Team # 1 with +7 3BB on front and +13 on the back swept all sides.  The real star was the wind which swooped in part way through the front nine and gusted over to 30mph during the rest of the round.  Scores were affected by the windy conditions with one exception.  Dougie shot an incredible 75 when the next lowest score was Bear's stroke controlled 81.  Most players were in the mid 80s or low 90s.

There were 4 skins worth $15 (Billy D, Tractorman, TJ and Dougie).  Notable no shows were Commish and Cheez.  Mad Dog played in the rain and cold on Saturday but ducked out on the match with Bear by using his grandson excuse on Sunday.

Memorial Day also Mad Dog's Birthday meant it was time for Pudge's semi annual Red, White and Blue Tournament.  His record Pot Game number of participants was 28 until yesterday when 30 showed up dressed in red, white or blue (well almost all; Loy was decked out in black & gold so he got an X).  Mad Dog gave himself a birthday present by creating his own dream team which even had the Tournament Director's eyes rolling along with every other Pot Gamer.

Six teams were formed with five players each, playing 4 BB.  Teams teed off in thick fog on the north course from the Red tees.  Team #1 Triple N, Joey M, Dougie, Fireman and Bill M led off followed by Team # 2 Bear, Tractorman, Bow Pete, Chimney and House.  Team # 3 Sandy, Forty, Birdie, Skooger and Lenny; Team # 4 Pudge, Skrocki, Brett, Clayton and Blue Tees; Team #5 Brad-Brian, Cheez, Commish, Rama and Deacon; Team #6 Mad Dog, Jay Esch, Dr Dave, Billy D and Loy.

Bundled Up Commish
The 4 BB format kept everyone in the round but produced slow play of over four hours.  Mad Dog's team blistered the front nine with a score of +5 three shots ahead of the next team, but stumbled on the back to lose to Bear's team's score of +2.  However Mad Dog's team did take overall so they scooped up 2/3 of the Pot.  With 30 thirsty Pot Gamers the pot did get dented pretty good before the money was divided.  There were six skins worth $25 a piece (Cheez 2, Billy D (eagle on 5th)1, Brad-Brian 1, Triple N 1 and Jay Esch 1).

Deck Dwellers
Low scores of the day were turned in by Jay Esch 70 (with a bad back),  Triple N 70,  Sandy 71, Tractorman 73 and Birdie 74.  Bear on the strength of three birdies to Mad Dog's none got $4 from the Dog making YTD Mad Dog $1.  Birdie with three side matches collected $19 with his four birdie 74.  Rama extracted another $2 from House.

The big news of the day was that Commish made his first appearance of 2013 even though at tee off the temperature hovered around 37 degrees.  Cheez who did play on Wednesday, also made his first weekend Pot Game appearance along with Lenny, Clayton and newcomer Dr Dave.  So the "who would show up first" between Commish and Cheez ended in a draw.

Despite the sunny day it was still cool on the deck, so everyone moved their chairs out of the shade to the sunny side.

Pudge again demonstrated his magical powers of persuasion which produced a record number of players without special invitations or secret handshakes.  Deacon can only shake his head in wonderment.

This and That

Pudge has announced Monday May 27th as his date for the first 2013 Red, White and Blue tournament. He is hoping for at least 24 players to attend. So dig out your Patriotic wardrobe and have it ready for Monday. Pudge said the best dressed Pot Gamer will get a bag of Dick's finest fake wooden tees as a prize. For Blue Tees it is a chance to step back on his favorite tees one last time. House may breakdown when he finds out he can actually tee off on the whites 6 times without getting an X.

The Gazette has confirmation from sources inside both the Commish camp and Cheez camp that both will be attending at least one Pot Game this weekend. So on Saturday will it be the moldy old Cheez whose game is rusty because he traveled 1400 miles from FL with stops in NC, who shows up first or will it be the former iron fisted Commish, who use to bark his orders from his perch on the upper balcony of the club house who has to travel 8 miles from his farm in Sullivan with donkey shit on his shoes? Who you got?

Bretwood food services have announced that they have added fresh hot homemade pizza to the snack shacks menu. It will will be served by the slice. So along with last years additions of lobster rolls, breakfast burritos and jumbo hot dogs you can chow down in style at the turn. Now that is what we call member service.

Scouting reports:
Mad Dog claims he has found the missing pieces to his game. We haven't seen any 68s posted though. Could be his Birthday wish for Monday when he becomes SS eligible.

Billy D will hit a fade and will score between 84-86. Take it to the bank.

Rama has his game back. Lots of solid hits but near misses on putts keeping him from 70s.

Little Bow Pete turns from a solid B player into a weak D player when he has Bear as his Captain. So don't pick their team when they are matched up.

Loy has hit the ground running with two solid rounds in his first weekend. Commish better watch out.

Deacon is driven to drink because he hits towering drives, crisp irons, one check pitches and holes long putts, but when he adds up his score card its still 85. Of course Pot money still flows into his pockets on the deck despite the mystery of his scoring.

Tractorman has been quietly scoring in the 70s and supplementing his income with generous portions of the Pot.

Birdie has his putting locked in but his stinger driver is a little weak and crooked. Don't count him out for another victory in the "Battle At The Beav" just yet though.

Threesomes Never Win

Saturday:
Mad Dog instead of making two five man teams decided to create uneven teams so the Pot Game would be forced into playing quota.  But on the first tee of North it was announced that regular old two BB would be the format.  Team #1 Bear, Birdie and Bow Pete showed promise on paper but never found the scoring groove and took themselves out of the competition after the front nine.  Team #2 Skrocki, TJ and Bill Mag also never found the way to get the ball into the hole unless it was for bogeys and doubles.  So that left Team #3 lead by co-captains Tractorman and Joey M with Deacon and Loy (2013 debut).  Ding Donging their way to victory with + 4 on the front and a sizzling even on the back to swept all sides.  When threesomes play lousy and foursomes play steady, guess who always win.

There were 5 skins worth $10 a piece (Tractorman 2, Bear 1, Bill Mag 1 and Joey M 1).  Low scores of the day belonged to Tractorman 77, Skrocki 78 and Joey M 80.

Mad Dog claimed that he is playing great after all his practicing yet made up an excuse as to why he couldn't play the Bear.  Something about taking swing set to his grandchildren in VT.

Sunday:
Fourteen players came out expecting possible showers half way through the round but were treated to bright sunny skies all morning.  Mad Dog determined to make the Pot Gamers play quota again created foursomes against threesomes, but two BB format prevailed again.  Team #1 Bear, Billy D and Rama lead the way with fast play but not much else as they couldn't putt the ball anywhere other the edge of the hole.  Team #2 Jay Esch, Andy Mac and Chimney were rolling early until Jay wrenched his back and saw their chances knot up.  So that left Team # 3 Skrocki, Birdie, House and Loy to battle it out with Team # 4 Tractorman, TJ, Blue Tees and Deacon.  Team # 3 was even on the front and +6 on the back which matched Team # 4's +6 on the front and even on the back.  So they split the Pot.

There were only 3 skins worth $23 a piece (Bear 1, Tractorman 1 and Andy Mac 1).  Low scores were Skrocki 77, TJ 79, Bear 80 and Andy Mac 80.

For those keeping track Rama took $2 from House in their dollar-a-hole match.  House was rather quiet on the deck after his outburst two weeks ago.  Everyone did notice he kept looking over at Deacon making sure he wasn't in his "sights".

Mad Dog forgetting he had used the same excuse yesterday as to why he couldn't play the Bear, said he had to deliver a swing set to VT.  Wonder what excuse he will use next weekend?

A surprise appearance (deck only) was made by the Cheez.  He was there to greet all his fellow Pot Gamers.  He even bought a rack for the boys.  He promised to make his debut on Sunday but was a no show.  So it is still even money as to whether Commish or Cheez will be the first to make a Pot Game and we are deep into May.

Pudge snubbed the Pot Game both days to play in fund raiser scramble tournaments.

Who Will Show

As the weather grows warmer, all Pot Gamers will be scanning the parking lot before tee off to see if Cheez or Commish will show up for their first Pot Game of 2013.  The Gazette has inside information that the Commish will be a no show this weekend but will make an appearance Memorial Day Weekend.  So the only question left is: Will the Cheez come out of hiding?  Stay tuned.

Mad Dog has been playing almost every day inorder to sharpen his game to collect Bear's money.  So Thursday along with Billy D and Blue Tees, they resumed their match.  Mad Dog and Blue Tees played BB against Bear and Billy D.  The first nine was halved, but the back nine belonged to Mad Dog and Blue Tees who ding-donged their way to a 3-2 victory and $13.  Mad Dog coaching up Blue Tees watched as Blue Tees putted out of traps, rough and fringes to shoot 39.  Mad Dog on the strength of three deuces on the par 3s cleaned Bear for $5 making their YTD $5 in Mad Dog's favor.

Loy, Commish's little ATM machine is scheduled to make his debut this weekend.  Too bad Commish won't be here to make a withdrawal.

The ever growing pot for the Hole-In-One pool is ripe for the picking, if you can dunk one in a Pot Game.  Don't do like Little Bow Pete and make one during Invitational.

Foot In Mouth

Mr XX House
As Pot Gamers were gathering around the sign-up sheet table and eating breakfast,  House began complaining about having to tee off from the blue tees.  He said a 70 yr old should be able to play the whites.  When everyone reminded him he hits it as long as the longest hitters and Deacon who is his same age doesn't complain.  House firmly placed his foot in his mouth with this quote: "Deacon didn't work hard, all he did was ride around all day.  I had to work hard all my life."  Even with all the Pot Gamers rolling their eyes at what they just heard coming from House's lips, he kept it up.  Bear reminded him that Deacon is "packing" and he can't turn to the State Police for protection when the Deacon hunts him down because he just threw the whole police profession under the bus. House kept muttering about his life has been hard.  Later on the deck he tried to change the tone of what he said but no one was allowing him to get away with it.

Some Pot Gamers have mentioned that House takes a lot of abuse but this next House tale will help bring into focus why he brings it on himself.  House and Rama match cards dollar a hole like a lot others do.  House sneaks onto the white tees a few weeks ago while Rama thinks he is playing the blues.  House wins $10 and doesn't even buy Rama a beer.  He pretends he bought one but it really was purchased by the winnings in the Pot.  When pressed he admitted he lied about buying it.  So fast forward to Sunday, House loses $4 to Rama and then demands Rama buy him a beer.  See what we mean... (Rama did not buy him a beer).  House has two Xs and is dangling by a thread from being X'd out of the Pot Game and it is only May.

Back to actual playing of the Pot Game.  Sunday brought lots of clouds and a few sprinkles but it didn't stop 14 players from teeing it up on the South course.  Neither Commish nor Cheez showed for those of you at home keeping score.  Mad Dog decided to do Grandfather duties rather than risk losing more money to Bear, so he created 4 teams (two 3s and two 4s) and then left.  With uneven numbers they were forced to play quota for the first time all year.

Team #1 was Bear, Birdie and Brett.  Followed by Team #2 Brad-Brian, TJ and Billy D, then Team #3 Skrocki, Chimney, Andy Mac and the infamous House.  Bringing up the rear was Team #4 Joey M, Dougie, Rama and Bill Maguire.  It was a wipe out by Team #2 as they had +4 on both sides which means they collected all the pot and the title of biggest sandbaggers.  Team #4 imploded on the front with -14 but roared back to a +3.5 on the back only to find out they lost by .5.  They did win the best comeback award which got them no money but the admiration of the rest of the Pot Gamers (not really).

The low scores of the day were Skrocki 73, TJ 75, Brad-Brian 75, Bear 77 and Chimney 79.  They were the only players under 80.  There were 7 skins worth $10 a piece (Dougie 2, TJ 2, Skrocki 1, Billy D 1 and Joey M 1).

Maytag Repairman

A little rain and an Elks tournament kept all the Pot Gamers home except, The Bear. When even B boys didn't appear he played the north course to see if he could complete a round without hitting a chunk. Mad Dog free from his tournament duties joined him on the 10th tee for a continuation of their dollar a hole match. With Mad Dog hitting just one green and Bear only missing one, $5 came out of Dog's pocket on the 18th green to make the YTD total all even.

Who will make a weekend Pot Game first, The Commish afraid of rain and cold weather or the Cheez fresh from The Villages exhausted from yard work preparing his house for the market.  Given the cool forecast, Cheez would have to be the favorite.

Mother's Day is tomorrow so don't forget to get your wife or Mother a nice present just before you bolt out the door for the Pot Game.

Tractorman has been nominated by an anonymous Pot Gamer to receive an X for inviting DMac to play in the Pot Game.  It might be because his teams won 5 of 6 pots last weekend.  X is under review but unlikely to be handed out.

Some Stale Tales

Time is marching on bringing warmer weather to the weekend Pot Games, but not warm enough for The Commish to make an appearance.  There are several new Pot Gamers who when old time Pot Gamers refer to the "one they call Commish" don't know if he is real or imagined.

Two week old news:  Bear gets $2 back from Mad Dog making YTD Mad Dog up $2.  House sneaks onto the white tees on Saturday while the Bear was away.  He bets Rama (who thought he was playing blues) and cheated him out of $10.  Deacon ripped him a new one for violating the 2013 rule he must play the blues.  Bear calls him out on Sunday for playing the whites and for misleading Rama.  He issues House two Xs, to loud applause from the deck dwelling Pot Gamers.  House response was to tell Bear he can't issue Xs because he isn't Commish.  Xs stand.  Deacon continues to find himself on winning teams and raking in the cash.

Saturday: Mad Dog unilaterally decides to change tee time to 7am.  Everyone shows up ready to tee off only to find out Mad Dog pencils it in as 7:20am, so 16 players are waiting to tee off watching duffers tee off in front of them on the south course.  There were four teams: Bear, Birdie, 40 and Deacon team #1.  DMac, TJ, Bow Pete and Fireman Team #2.  Pudge. Joey M, Brett and Skooger team #3 and Mad Dog, Tractorman, Billy D and Chimney team #4.  It was a complete blow out with DMac team winning all three sides in three best balls.  There were only 3 skins worth $25 a piece (Birdie, Bear (both Roy Boy Skins) and Fireman.  Low scores of the day were DMac 75, Mad Dog 76 and TJ 79, the only scores under 80.

Mad Dog took $5 from the struggling Bear so YTD Mad Dog up $7.

When 40 and Bear went out to the deck there was a couple with a new born baby and two other women with a stroller sitting at the next table.  They quickly started to calculate how long it would take to clear the deck after the Deacon came out to sit down.  They settled on 5 minutes for the over/under.  It took exactly 3.5 minutes and two F bombs by the Deacon to move them off the deck.  He hasn't lost his touch.  The best part was when Bear told him about the bet, Deacon didn't even know he had dropped a couple F bombs.

Sunday: With 70 degrees in the forecast, 24 Pot Gamers showed up.  Somehow Mad Dog was able to muster his best math skills and create 6 teams.  Of course he also used his slight of hand to create a "dream team" for himself.  When he read off the teams he set off a chorus of boos from the putting green from the stunned and angry Pot Gamers.  Here is the team he thought was very fair to the rest of the field.  Team #5 Captain Triple N, B player Mad Dog (76 day before), C Player TJ (79 day before) and Blue Tees out of the D player spot.  The other teams were as follows: Team #1 Brad-Brian, Kirk P, Bow Pete and Billy D, Team #2 Sandy, Skrocki, Brett and Chimney, Team #3 Mini, Tractorman, Dougie and Rod P, Team #4 Bear, Jay Esh, Birdie and Deacon, Team #6 DMac, Otis, 40 and Rama.  The format was 4 on par 3s, 3 on par 4s and 2 on par 5s.  The format change did wipe the smirk off of Team #5's faces, as they were crying about wanting to play 3 BBs on the first tee.  Team # 6 lead by strong showings by Otis, DMac and 40 all in the 70s took two thirds of the pot.  The Dream Team #5 was able only to win the back.

There were 4 skins worth $30 a piece (40, Otis (eagle 17th), Blue Tees and TJ).  Low scores of the day Otis 72, DMac 74 and Kirk P 75.  A total of 9 players broke 80.  TJ and Triple N are under investigation for overwriting an 80 score (correct) with a 79 (incorrect).  Triple N has a reputation for filling out cards and creating scores on the deck.  Could be an X in one of their futures.  Deacon's winning ways come to an abrupt halt when he gets Bear as his Captain for two days straight.

Mad Dog crying all the way around the course as to how bad he was playing ended up losing $2 to Bear making YTD $5 in Mad Dog's favor.
